Scope and Contents of the Materials

Circa 1935-1958 clippings, programs, diplomas, and photographs relating to the Preston School of Dancing, likely collected by Marguerite May Phelps of Norfolk, Virginia. This collection also includes a few photographs of downtown Norfolk after the March 1962 Ash Wednesday Storm, photographs of Church of the Good Shepherd, and other Norfolk-related printed ephemera.

Biographical Note

Marguerite May Phelps Vail was born on June 11, 1926 in Norfolk, Virginia. She attended St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh, North Carolina. Vail married Jack Harrell Vail on April 30, 1949 in Norfolk, Virginia. She was a member of the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Garden Club of Norfolk, and Norfolk Society of Arts. Vail died on September 22, 2012 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
