Scope and Contents of the Materials
Clipping scrapbooks compiled by Alleene C. Jones of Norfolk, Virginia. Scrapbook 1 (1912-1936) primarily chronicles conventions and annual meetings of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Norfolk from 1923-1936, although there are also clippings relating to local history and theater. Ephemera from Scrapbook 1 includes convention programs, ribbons, a pin, an invitation, and a photograph. Scrapbooks 2-4 include obituaries and deaths of primarily local notable figures from 1922-1947 and 1971-1977. Scrapbook 5 includes clippings of local engagements, weddings, birthdays, and other social events from 1931-1936. Scrapbook 6 includes clippings on events in Norfolk from 1940-1941, along with notecards from Jones's involvement in the Business and Professional Women's Club, and programs on the Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Box 4 includes a 1930-1931 scrapbook that appears to have belonged to Nathaniel Montier Caffee, a mathematics schoolteacher at Fredericksburg High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Biographical Note
Alleene Charles Jones was born on November 26, 1877 in Norfolk County, Virginia. She attended Leache-Wood Seminary in Norfolk, Virginia and worked for the law firm Willcox, Cooke and Willcox for 36 years. She was a member of Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church and a charter member of the Business and Professional Women's Club in Norfolk, Virginia. She died on June 8, 1979 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
