Scope and Contents of the Materials
Correspondence and clippings documenting Baron Jean de Lustrac's attempt to erect a monument in downtown Norfolk, Virginia in honor of French Admiral Francois Joseph Paul Comte de Grasse, whose success in the Battle of the Chesapeake in 1781 led to the British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia. The collection also includes correspondence and clippings relating to de Lustrac's acquiring of 10 replica cannons for Yorktown, suggesting to name the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel after de Grasse, and donating of model flagships of La Ville de Paris to the Museum of the Revolutionary War in Washington, D. C. and Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences in Norfolk, Virginia.
Biographical Note
Baron Jean de Lustrac was born in Chatellerault, France on August 13, 1894. He was a cavalry officer in the French army during World War I, and he served with the French Military Mission in Washington, D. C. during World War II. De Lustrac was a well-known cultural leader in the Norfolk, Virginia region. He married Helen Reid on November 24, 1925 in Norfolk, Virginia. The de Lustracs split their time living in Norfolk and Paris, France from the mid-1920s until their deaths. De Lustrac died on April 1, 1973 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
