Scope and Contents of the Materials
Circa 1914-1918 business and personal correspondence belonging to Richard A. Old of Norfolk, Virginia. The collection also includes photographs of the Monticello Hotel fire aftemath in 1918, account books for R. A. Old & Company from 1936-1937, and the diary of Richard A. Old, Jr. from 1930-1937.
Biographical Note
Richard Ames Old was born on January 13, 1873 in Nansemond County, Virginia. He was a wholesale grocer; Old operated R. A. Old & Company at 219 East Water Street in Norfolk, Virginia. He was also Treasurer of The Pocomoke Guano Company, a manufacturer of fertilizers. He married Lila Nell Cole, circa 1910. Old was a member of Larchmont Methodist Church and Ruth Lodge, No. 89, A. F. & A. M. He died on April 24, 1956 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
