Scope and Contents of the Materials
Minutes, organizational records, programs, and papers of the Monday Club in Norfolk, Virginia. The minutes cover 1892-1902, 1914-1918, and 1962-2008. There are also copies of the club's constitution from 1916-2005. Correspondence in the collection is dated 1955 and 1992-2011. There are also photographs of Monday Club members, most of which were taken during the 100th Anniversary Luncheon on October 12, 1992. A list of topics discussed during each year's club meetings ranges in date from 1930/1931-2010/2011. Programs showing each meeting's topics and listing club officers cover 1897-1920 and 1924-2012. There are also copies of papers presented at meetings for 2007-2015, 2018-2019, and 2020-2022, along with undated handwritten papers.
Biographical Note
The first meeting of the Monday Club occurred on October 31, 1892 in Norfolk, Virginia. The purpose of this women's club was the study of literature, science, and art. The women chose topics each year for group discussion and presented papers on some aspect of that year's subject.
